Kanapaha Park Community Center

Project: Kanapaha Park Community Center
Location: Gainesville, Florida
Owner: Alachua County Board of County Commissioners
Construction Cost: $1.31 Million
Project Size: 4,162 SF
Completion: May 2012In 2008, voters in Alachua County passed the ½ cent sales tax dubbed ‘Wild Spaces, Public Places’. The new community center at Kanapaha represents the County’s major capital project funded from the sales tax revenues. Early on in design, the County Commission reduced the budget from $2.2 Million down to $1.4 Million. Our team worked with the project architect (SVM) and the County’s Parks Director to develop a building program representative of community / veteran’s input, while keeping to the $1.4 Million budget.

The resulting design was a combination of Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF), load-bearing masonry, wood roof framing, tapered foam insulation, and a modified bituminous roof systems. The building’s main feature, a two-story light-tower at the lobby is capped with a single-slop roof, wrapped in tongue and groove cypress and a green standing seam metal roof.
